SEE YOU NEXT CENTURY
In this short film by James Lee, where it is a homage to Chris Marker's La Jetée (1962), that involves a time travelling machine to visit a woman novelist by a scientist from the future that claims to be his husband, where it tells the simple bond of the two character which somehow showcase love from a different timeline.
As for the cinematography of the film, I can say that out of the films I’ve watched, he is the only one who uses a grayscale pictures but didn’t fail to deliver the meaning of the story or what he was trying to portray. To the lighting of the black and white picture that emphasizes the character as well as the emotions the character are trying to deliver like being sad, worried, and happy is being showed through the expression of their faces.
I love how he creatively used pictures to tell and conceptualize his whole story. Also, those meaningful lines used in the story gives an impact to those people who are watching including myself, that moves me when I heard of it. Like how they said “Only with darkness there’ll be light. With sorrow, only we will treasure joy. With distance, only we understand connection.” Lastly, the twist in the story which she mentioned that every time they meet each other at the same time they didn’t talked about the woman’s future but later on revealed why the guy doesn’t like to talk about it and how time really can affect people – our past, present, and future impacts our life and the memories we hold on to but in every choices we made there are sacrifices we need to face like fading those memories you built to be with the person you love.
